This module looks at major mental illness as defined in the DSM-IV. This course offers a study of socio-cultural, emotional, cognitive and behavioural deviations with descriptions, patterns of development, measurement and treatment methods. Assessment, diagnosis and treatment strategies will be examined in light of current research. A special focus of this module will be to consider the distinction that exists between abnormal and normal behaviour and the ways in which emotionally distressed persons are often indistinguishable from normal persons.
